Livermore is home to two of three
Defense Program laboratories
in the country. Founded
in 1952, Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory has a staff of over 8,000 employees
and is home to over 3,500 scientists, engineers, and technicians, as
well as professionals
encompassing many other disciplines. Sandia
National Laboratories/California provides engineering support and systems integration for many national
security programs.
The City of Livermore
also boasts an historic downtown area,
steeped in its roots reflecting the cattle and wine industries that
created the thriving community it is today. Once the largest
and fastest growing city in the region, for much
of its history Livermore has been an agricultural community. Vineyards
and ranches prosper within and around the city today.
The Annual
Wine Country Festival, Certified Farmer'sMarket,
Holiday Parade, and Downtown Trick or Treat bring people to the
center of town
year round to celebrate the bounties of Livermore's agricultural heritage
and spirit of its community. Livermore is also home to the world's
longest running light bulb, which has faithfully illuminated Fire
Station #6 since 1901.
